Preserving the Past: Innovations in Costume Storage and Archival Practices
Take a peek at my project within this presentation^
This summer I was fortunate to receive the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Humanities (SURF-H) from the University of Oregon’s Undergraduate Research and Distinguished Scholarships Division. This grant allowed me to pursue a project with the Theatre Arts Department and faculty mentor Jeanette deJong.
My work focused on studying historic garments, reorganizing and classifying pieces in the university’s antique costume collection, and helping to streamline a large portion of the costume storage for easier use in future productions.
This experience gave me the chance to deepen my knowledge of historic dress, archival organization, and costume management—skills I’m excited to carry forward in both research and design.
I was also fortunate to schedule an in-person meeting with Marci Morimoto at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and ask her questions about how they store their garments and talk about her job as a Collections Manager.
Grateful for the opportunity to combine my passions for costume history and theatre into meaningful hands-on work! I will be continuing to work on this project throughout the school year and presenting it at the University of Oregon's Undergraduate Research Symposium in May 2026! 🎭👗
